The Mona Lisa is said to be a portrait of a real woman. Her name is Lisa Gherardini, wife of Fracesco del Giocondo. It was painted during the 16th century in Italy. It is currently owned by the french government and is in Musee du Louvre in Paris, France. It became famous in mid-19th century because artists of the symbolist movement began to appreciate it. On August 21, 1991, the portrait was stolen. After two years, the thief was arrested. It was Vincenzo Peruggia, who intended to bring the portrait back to Italy. Mona Lisa also survived multiple attempts on destroying it. In 1956, the poor old girl was first scarred with acid, and then attacked with a rock. Bulletproof glass protected it when, in 1974, a disabled woman, protesting against the Louvre’s policy on handicapped visitors, threw red paint at the picture. The glass again saved the picture only three years ago, when an angry Russian woman, denied French  citizenship, threw a teacup at the painting.
